Flower fashion causes fuss
Florists in Cardiff, florists in Swansea and florists in the rest of Wales have been getting all worked up following a succession of headlines around the quirky floral centrepieces some budding UK flower fanatics have come up with.
Charlotte Baker, Janet Hodgson and Vicky Rymell worked on a concept to combine beautiful flowers with beautiful dresses, having achieved a great deal for the florist industry and the flower arranging trend.
Baker, Hodgson and Rymell are generating plenty of interest and media attention, which they hope will have a significant impact on their own and every other florist around the UK, simply by combining fashion with flowers. By broadening the appeal of flowers Bridgend flower enthusiasts, as well as those throughout the country, may well catch on and be encouraged to buy flowers for their next special occasion.
Coventry’s Hubbards Florist is where Baker and Rymell ply their trade, and the shop for which they won this year’s RHS Flower Show Tatton Park birthday shop window competition, having constructed a stunning hat comprising of a wide variety of vibrant shades of blue, purple and ochre.
Baker told the Coventry Telegraph: “It was brilliant to win. We chose the theme because we like all the colours and we only had a few months to prepare.
“I love competing because it gives me a real buzz as well as the chance to really develop my skills and experience.”
Hodgson, however, claimed her stake as a flower fashionista when she unveiled a dress comprising of hanging amaranthus, germini, hydrangeas, roses and orchids at an event to celebrate the first anniversary of Bury’s The Rock shopping mall.
When it was decided The Rock’s birthday would be commemorated with a floral theme, Ms Hodgson stepped up to the plate and showed her commissioners that she was more than up to the challenge, thus creating a beautiful dress, which was to be supported by a large frame.
“We had to reinforce it with tent poles and chicken wire – it was like we were on Blue Peter!” said Hodgson on the Interflora blog.
“I have to admit that when I first saw it on the model it looked so fabulous that I cried! It was a very proud moment for me. It was such fun!”
